45 YEARS AGO

Max Riley of Roswell last week bought about 10 carloads of heavy feeder lambs in the wool at $18 from various owners in the Roswell area.

Bill Lee of Aspermont, Texas, sold 100 fed steers out of feedlots in Abilene at $22; these were the J.D. Patterson cattle from Peacock Western Cottonoil Company feedlots in Abilene.

Hance & Bogle of Clovis sold 1000 mixed calves for delivery between now and March 15 at $18 and $20 to Ted Waldhauser of Clovis, buying for Wertheimer Cattle Company. They also sold, to Peyton Packing Company of El Paso, two loads of fed steer yearlings weighing 795 pounds at $21.50 cwt.

J.R. Lawrence and Bill Swanson of Amarillo sold 90 Angus steer yearlings weighing 640 pounds at $18 to Hugh Wilson of Amarillo, delivered last week and shipped to Iowa feeders.

Bob Chandler of Texas Livestock Marketing Association, Fort Worth, last weekend shipped, from Brady, 1082 clipped feeder lambs weighing 76 pounds at $16.50 cwt. These were bought from D.K. McMullan Jr., Big Lake.

40 YEARS AGO

Fred Darden of Visalia, Calif., bought 500 fed steers described as "good but plain quality" for delivery this month and next at $26 from O.N. Jennings & Son, Muleshoe; these will have been on feed 100-120 days and are expected to weigh around 1050 pounds at delivery.

Roy Cluck & Son, Dimmitt, Texas, sold 90 fed steers weighing 1000 pounds at $26 and delivered them last week to a California buyer.

Mike Moser of Adrian, Texas, sold 180 steer calves weighing about 400 pounds and delivered them last week at $37 to Bob Hulett of Amarillo.

Leon Wilhelm, Amarillo, bought 60 Angus cows, fours to sixes, weighing near 1000 pounds and with five calves on them, at $258 per cow and received them last week from W.S. Cline, Amarillo.

If there was any change in the Southwestern sheep and lamb market this week, it was for the worse. Fat lambs opened about steady Monday in Fort Worth but were quoted weak to 50 cents lower by noon Wednesday, at which time they were topping at $17.50 except for a fancy load which brought $18.

Crockett Kehoe, Amarillo, bought 200 feeder steers weighing 800 pounds at $21.50 from Everett Bros., Etter, Texas.

Diedrichsen Feed Lots, Dumas, sold 84 fed steers weighing 1100 pounds, mixed good and choice, at $22.25.

MARKET REPORT: Main problem in the West is that cost of grains make fed cattle money-losers despite the stronger market. Some operators are losing the feed bill or more.

Beef and veal imports for the 12 months between July 1962 and June 1963 were valued at $325 million. The value of all meat and meat products, animal fats and cattle and calf hides and skins was $520 million.

Gus Wortham, Houston, bought 21,662 acres of state land in the Lowery Hagerman Ranch near Clines Corners, N.M. for a top bid of $26 per acre or $563,213.30.

Uvalde Feed Yards delivered 1883 fat lambs averaging 101 pounds to Swift & Co. at $26.50 weighed at the lot with four percent shrink; the feedlot bought 5000-6000 feeder lambs at $25 or less, top price for good summer-clipped lambs 70 pounds or better.

Roy Wood of Farley, N.M., was reported to have bought 548 Okie heifers and steers weighing 380 pounds at $24.50 and $28 in the Texarkana and Fayetteville, Ark. areas.

Pratt Feedlot, Pratt, Kan., sold 712 steers weighing 1057-1150 at $27.50 to Kansas packers.

Dumas Cattle Feeders Inc., Dumas, sold 161 good and choice 1100 pound steers at $26.75 to an Oklahoma packer and 822 mostly choice 1100-1125 pound steers at $27.75 to a Kansas packer.

Hereford Feed Yards sold 135 mostly choice 1000-1025 pound steers at $28.50 to a Texas packer.

Tommy Buckner, Dalhart, bought in that area for Nortex Feedlot Co., Dalhart, 175 No. 1 Okie heifers weighing 500 pounds at $47.50.

Hansford Feedyard, Spearman: 200 steers, 1175 lbs., 70% choice, $49.75; 100 steers, 1175 lbs., 75% choice, $50.

Vernon Estes, Bovina, sold and delivered to a local buyer 272 No. 1 Okie heifers weighing 437 pounds at $48.

John Womack, Canyon, bought at Altus, Okla., 160 Holstein steers weighing 850 pounds at $44.75.

Continental Cattle Co., Amarillo and Dodge City, Kan., bought in the Dodge City area 110 choice Hereford and black baldface steers weighing 650 pounds at $53, and 126 No. 1 Okie steers weighing 675 at $53.75.

In Wyoming's Big Horn Basin, some 105 pound feeders have been delivered to feedlots at $75.

Dale Cattle Co., Abilene, bought in that area for May delivery 1900 No. 1 Okie heifers and steers expected to weigh 650 pounds at $65 and $70.

Far-Tex Feeders, Farwell: 505 steers, 1050-1075 lbs., 65-75% choice, $60; 100 Holstein steers, 1075 lbs., 50% choice, $58.50.

Buck and Jim Sumners, representing B&J Cattle Co., Dalhart, bought in the Texas Panhandle 318 No. 1 steers weighing 690 pounds at $70; in the Oklahoma Panhandle 190 similar heifers weighing 475 at $69.

Texas Beef Producers Feed Yard, Dumas: 249 steers, 1075 lbs., 65% choice, $59.75; 134 steers, 1080 lbs., 65% choice, $60.

Livestock owners in 42 Texas drouth-designated counties have been okayed for 3.2 million bushels of corn out of government storage, though producers have not yet picked up all of it.

The Blackwell, Okla. teleauction sold 430 lambs at $60.25 for shorn, $58.25 wooled.

Bill Porter, representing Clarendon Cattle Co., Clarendon, sold to an Oklahoma buyer 700 preconditioned Okie steers weighing 360 at $65; to a Canyon buyer 200 preconditioned heifers weighing 384 at $58.

Stiles Cattle Co., Cuero, bought in the local area 118 No. 1 haired crossbred steers weighing 361 pounds at $110.50; 108 similar steers weighing 434 at $103.25; 120 No. 1 haired crossbred heifers weighing 330 at $101; 95 similar steers weighing 535 at $92.
