45 YEARS AGO

J.D. Hance of Clovis bought, from John Jarrott of Lubbock, 260 heifer calves averaging about 450 pounds at $17, February 11 delivery, on order for California buyers.

Jess Kuykendall of Happy, Texas, last week sold one load of steer calves at $20.50 to Roy N. Byrd of Canyon for immediate delivery.

J.M. Crews of Childress, Texas, is reported to have sold 1000 steer yearlings delivered off wheat pasture January 28, at 20 cents a pound.

Oldham County Cattle Company of Vega, Texas, sold 135 three year-old cows with 33 calves on them at $135 per head to G.W. Clark of Amarillo, delivered last week.

Fat cattle are about cleaned up from feedlots in the Abilene, Texas area, Mac Bowyer of that city reported this week. Around 200 choice steers and heifers from his lots sold at $22.50 this week for delivery during the next four weeks.

40 YEARS AGO

Mrs. Alvie Merrill of Amarillo sold 300 choice quality Hereford heifer and steer calves for Feb. 15-March 15 delivery off wheat to an Amarillo buyer at $32 and $34; these are expected to weigh 500-525 pounds.

Ross Brooks of Erick, Okla., is reported to have sold 100 mixed breed steer calves expected to weigh about 550 pounds at $27 for March 20 delivery.

Ben Sheppard, order buyer at Springfield, Mo., recently bought 50 good young Angus springer cows with five calves on the ground at $252.20 for shipment to Kansas; and 31 registered Hereford two year-old bulls at $400 each for shipment to Montana.

Miller & Eastburn of Amarillo sold 110 mixed calves weighing about 360 pounds at $33 and $36 to Carl McDonald of Texline, delivered last weekend.

35 YEARS AGO

Some 40,000 cattle were being fed hay from Army tanks and Air Force C-119s in the Texas Panhandle and Eastern New Mexico. Death losses from the snow were relatively light, but several hundred cattle were killed by trains. Bob Yarbrough, Dalhart, lost more than 100 head that way.

Some summer grass in Northeastern New Mexico that leased at $1-1.50 the previous year was going to $20 per head for the season for light yearlings. Bagby Bros., El Paso, leased country for about 4000 steers; they leased the Frank E. Sauble ranch near Springer, the Crews ranch at Raton and the Malcom Stewart ranch at Las Vegas, all on the gain basis.

Ranchers — the men who produce the cattle that go into feedlots — enjoyed relative immunity from the grim depression in feeding circles. But finishers said ranchers had better join them in whatever effective action can be taken to cure the packer market. "Otherwise," said the feeders, "If the present conditions hold awhile longer, those of us still in business will be buying yearlings at $15 instead of $25, and calves at $20 instead of $30."

The USDA reported that California had 850,000 head of cattle and calves on feed Feb. 1, 1964. Arizona had 337,000 on feed. Texas feedlots held 433,000 cattle and calves.

30 YEARS AGO

Truett Cattle Co., Silt, Colo., bought 297 black baldface steers weighing 475 at $32.25 in the Amarillo area.

Frances Allison, Dalhart, sold 867 Hereford, Angus and black baldface heifers weighing 550-650 pounds at $25 to a Perryton buyer.

For the 24th year, Buck Jackson, Pecos, was receiving cattle from the Balmorhea, Texas and Carlsbad, N.M. areas which he contracted last fall on order for Bill Parker, Arriba, Colo. About 3000 heifer and steer calves were in this year's deliveries, to be summered in Montana. Contract prices ranged from $26 on heifers up to $32 on steers; they were weighing about 375 pounds.

Texas County Feed Yards, Guymon, Okla., sold 100 steers weighing 1050 pounds, 75 percent choice, at $27.75.

Bill Eubanks, Happy, sold 770 No. 1 Okie and a few No. 2s at $27.80 to Swisher County Cattle Co., Tulia.

Cattle on feed Feb. 1 in seven leading states totaled 9,632,000 head, down four percent from a year earlier. They were up six percent in Texas and one percent in California, down in the other five. January placements totaled 1,805,000, down one percent from last year, though Texas and Colorado were up.

Swift & Co. bought 2500 fed wool lambs weighing 106-108 pounds from Morton Ranch, Douglas, Wyo., at $42 weighed and delivered to Scottsbluff, Neb.; 1000 lambs in No. 1 pelt weighing 105 pounds at $41.50 f.o.b. feedlot from the Beef Palace, Edgemont, S.D.

JB Cattle Co., Abilene, sold on a delivered basis to Kansas buyers 129 choice steer calves weighing 407 pounds at $95.64, also 70 No. 1 Okie cutting bulls weighing 731 at $71.62; to South Texas buyers 167 choice black baldface heifers weighing 535 at $75.87 delivered; sold to a West Texas feedlot 87 feeder heifers weighing 556 at $70.50 f.o.b. Abilene.

Bob Josserand of Hereford was elected president of the National Cattlemen's Assn. at the annual meeting in Phoenix. He succeeds Dale Humphrey of Springville, Ind.

The San Angelo auction was short because of cold weather, receipts just 2154 head. The winter storm was worst in the Intermountain region. Idaho reported severe losses of both cattle and sheep in deep snow and extreme cold.
