COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A gold buckle is earned one ride at a time.

And Blu Bryant is one ride closer, thanks to a first-round win in the bull riding at the $324,225 Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show and Rodeo in Fort Worth. The 30-performance, multi-round rodeo, which began Jan. 22 and concludes Feb. 7, annually offers one of the biggest purses in the PRCA and can be a major stepping stone to the National Finals Rodeo in December.

Bryant, of Nacogdoches, Texas, topped 167 other bull riders in the rodeo's first round for the victory. The 24 year-old scored 84 points on Jump of the Bad Company Rodeo string to earn $4541 for the highest-marked ride on any roughstock animal at the rodeo so far. The first-round win in Fort Worth boosted Bryant into the top 15 in the 1999 Crown Royal World Standings.
