STATE OF THE
ART shearing techniques and facilities
were on display Tuesday at the San Angelo mall,
courtesy of sheep industry supporters who hoped
to give the general public a little insight into
their way of life. Shearing demonstrations
outdoors complemented an indoor display of
everything from grease wool through tops to
finished fabrics. Spokesmen were also on hand to
tout the industry's contributions to the West
Texas economy. |

Feeder Lambs Steady, Ewes Higher
Very little price change occurred this week on
feeder lambs, other than a couple of Texas auctions that
moved up a couple of dollars. Fat lambs were also mostly
steady. Slaughter ewes found prices sharply higher in
Texas and moderately higher in the Midwest.

Of Midweek Activity Moves Cattle At Steady Rate
A flurry of midweek trading moved a slew of Plains
fed cattle at steady prices, the second week in a row
that trades were made in a timely manner.

The cattle market improved significantly during
the past two years after the collapse of 1996. The
outlook for 1999 appears relatively bright as the size of
the U.S. herd continues to decrease.

The U.S. Senate may have given his boss a free
pass on the laws against perjury and obstruction of
justice, but a federal judge is cutting controversial
Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt no such slack. On
Monday, U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth found Babbitt
in contempt of court for withholding documents on missing
Indian trust funds.

The beef industry's team of new product
development experts is focusing on the creation of new
beef and veal concepts in an effort to increase the value

Basking in a trade commission ruling that

increased tariffs to stave off the import surge.

Fred Whitfield of Hockley earned enough cash at

Rodeo in El Paso to jump to the lead in the world
all-around rodeo standings.

On Feed Down 3 Percent In Seven Main Feeding States
Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter Feb. 1 in
the seven leading feeding states totaled 8.91 million
head, down three percent from a year ago but one percent
above Feb. 1, 1997.

Feeder Cattle Trade Mostly Higher Early Last Week
Most feeder cattle prices around the country were
higher last week with feeder steers and heifers steady to
$2 higher. By week's end, however, some weakness was
starting to show up.

Feeder Lambs Steady, Cattle Weak
Feeder lambs sold steady this week, slaughter
lambs firm, slaughter ewes sharply higher with good and
choice $5-8 higher and other grades $3-6 higher. Receipts
totaled 7445 head.

Saba, Brownwood, Mason Feeders Mixed
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady to strong in
Mason, Brownwood and San Saba last week except for a $1
lower trend on 625-725 pound steers, slaughter cows and
bulls steady, pairs and bred cows strong. Receipts
totaled 3079 head at the three sales.

Feeder Lambs Trade Higher
Feeder lambs sold $2-4 higher, slaughter lambs
$2-4 higher, slaughter ewes and bucks steady; stocker
Spanish goats steady, slaughter kids steady to $3 higher,
muttons and billies steady except weights under 90 pounds
$3-5 higher. Receipts totaled 3300 head.

Feeder Cattle Prices Little Softer
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady to $2 lower,
the decline on weights under 600 pounds, slaughter cows
$1-3 higher, bulls steady, stock cows and pairs steady.
Receipts totaled 1550 head.

Cattle Prices Said Steady, Strong
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady to strong,
slaughter cows lower. Receipts totaled 2278 head.
Fredericksburg
Feeder Steers, Heifers Strong
Feeder steers and heifers sold strong, slaughter
cows and bulls about steady. Receipts totaled 1188 head.
Colorado
City Feeder Steers, Heifers Higher
Feeder steers sold steady to $1 higher, heifers
$1-4 higher, slaughter cows $1-2 lower, bulls $1 lower,
bred stock cows and pairs steady. Receipts totaled 855
head.
Kansas
Direct Feeder Steers, Heifers Weak
Feeder steers sold weak to $2 lower in Kansas
direct trade last week, heifers steady to weak. The
weather was cool with little moisture. Wheat is beginning
to come out of dormancy and needs sunshine. Sales were
confirmed on 4342 head.
Lampasas
Feeder Steer, Heifer Prices
Feeder steers and heifers sold $1-3 higher,
slaughter cows and bulls steady. Receipts totaled 924
head.

Meat Production 1.1% Below A Year Ago
Total red meat production under federal inspection
last week was estimated at 861.2 million pounds, 1.1
percent less than a week earlier and .5 percent more than
a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to
date was up .6 percent at 6.38 billion pounds.

Video Sale Offers 2400 Cattle
Producers Video Auction offered 2400 cattle at
their regularly scheduled sale. Delivery is mostly
current through May.

Feeder Lambs, Stock Angoras Steady
Feeder lambs sold near steady, slaughter ewes and
bucks $3 higher; stock Angora nannies steady, slaughter
Angoras steady to $3 higher; stock Spanish nannies
steady, slaughter kids mostly $2-6 lower, fat nannies and
billies steady, muttons $5 lower. Receipts totaled 3200
head.

Cold Storage 4% Above A Year Ago
Total U.S. red meat supplies in freezers on
January 31, at 835.7 million pounds, were four percent
above a year ago and up two percent from December 1998.

Feeder Cattle Sell In Mixed Trends
Feeder steers sold mostly steady to $2 higher with
weights over 800 pounds $1 lower, heifers steady to $1
lower, fleshy off $2, slaughter cows $1 lower, bulls
steady, bred stock cows and pairs $10-20 lower. Receipts
totaled 2120 head.

Red Meat Output Down Slightly
Commercial red meat production for the United
States totaled 3.83 billion pounds in January, down
slightly from the 3.84 billion pounds produced in January
1998.

Feeder steers and heifers sold steady to $2 lower,
the decline on weights over 500 pounds, slaughter cows
and bulls steady. Receipts totaled 477 head.
