Nation’s Feeder Steer, Heifer
Trade Mostly Lower Last Week

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. —(USDA)— Feeder cattle and calf prices were mixed but mostly lower last week. Feeder steers and heifers sold steady to $1 lower, instances $2 off; exceptions included the Mountain states and the Northwest, which moved cattle steady to $2 higher.

Reduced offerings and relatively cheap grain didn't provide enough stimulus for buyers to jump feeder prices higher. Winter storms rumbled through the upper portion of the country and worked to curtail feeder marketings in some areas.

Although packers started the week bidding pretty tough, involved parties came to the table by midweek and most trading in the High Plains was consummated at $63, about steady. Most showlists were well cleaned up and some industry members expect this week's cattle will be priced higher as CMS April live steer contracts finished the week near $68.

Most winter grazing areas are in good shape, but some areas in Texas, particularly South Texas, could definitely use a good rain.

Yearlings over 600 pounds made up approximately 53 percent of the week's run.
