Calf Roper Cody Ohl Takes
Houston's All-Around Title

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Cody Ohl, the two-time and reigning world champion calf roper of Stephenville, Texas, showed Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo fans how good he is with a rope by winning the rodeo's all-around title and the $25,000 cash bonus that came with it.

Ohl, 25, didn't place in any of the three preliminary calf roping rounds, but qualified for the final round by roping and tying all three of his calves. The 6-0, 200-pound cowboy had qualified for the all-around race earlier by winning $1216 with a fourth-place tie in the third round of the team roping competition. In the calf roping race, Ohl roped and tied his final-round draw in 11.6 seconds to finish second in the round and earn $1500. His four-head total time of 46.3 seconds earned him fourth-place honors in the calf roping average standings and $4452, boosting his calf roping total to $5952.

When the dust settled, Ohl's all-around earnings of $7168 easily surpassed Ty Murray's $3438, and brought the $25,000 bonus to the timed-event hand.

Houston bull-riding titlist Myron Duarte broke an Astrodome bull riding record with a 93-point ride aboard Andrews Rodeo Company's Skat Kat Skoal in the final round. The previous record of 90 points was set by Murray in 1998.

Duarte, of Auburn, Wash., rode four bulls for 326 points and $13,284 en route to the bull riding title.

Other event winners in Houston were not so cut and dried. Bareback rider Pete Hawkins of Weatherford, Texas, earned more than any cowboy entered at the Houston rodeo — $17,740 — but didn't win a title.

Three calf ropers tied for their event's title. Blair Burk, Durant, Okla., roped four calves in 45.7 seconds as did fellow Oklahoman Jerome Schneeberger of Ponca City and Justin Maass of Giddings, Texas. Though the three men split the average win, Maass pocketed $9380, Burk won $8585 and Schneeberger took home $5247.

Rod Lyman of Victor, Mont., and Shawn Johnson of Checotah, Okla., tied for the steer wrestling average title. Each downed four steers in 21.8 seconds. Johnson pocketed $9884 while Lyman earned $7393.

In the national all-around competition, Fred Whitfield, Hockley, Texas, leads the event with $47,562. He is followed by Herbert Theriot, Poplarville, Texas, with $25,874; Ty Murray, Stephenville, Texas, $19,492; Chad Hagan, Leesville, La., $16,632; and Joe Beaver, Huntsville, Texas, $11,427.
