Nation’s Feeder Cattle Prices
Turned To Weak Side Last Week

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. —(USDA)— Feeder steer and heifers prices turned weaker around the country last week. Feeder steers and heifers sold steady to $1 lower, occasionally $2 off.

Most often, feeders headed for grass managed to hold around steady with any price losses confined primarily to feedyard-bound offerings and more particularly, steers over 850 pounds and heifers over 750 pounds.

Most interests in the market, both buyers and sellers, kept a close eye on action in the major fed cattle direct areas. Disappointment prevailed by the week's end concerning price levels on fed offerings, both alive and on CME futures. Fed cattle sales in the High Plains at the week's end managed no better than $65.

The feeder run was supplemented, at least in part, by the need to move cattle off early maturing wheat pastures. Yearlings weighing more than 600 pounds made up approximately 54 percent of the week's run.
