45 YEARS AGO

Foster Pickett of Amarillo has bought three loads of aged cows with calves at $143 per pair from Hand Faustian of Amarillo; these were delivered last week.

George Rohan of Panhandle, Texas, sold 94 steer yearlings averaging 594 pounds at $20.75 to Kotara & Britten of Lark and Groom, Texas, delivered May 1.

Mims & Knott Cattle Company of Albuquerque this week sold and delivered 100 cake-and-grass yearling heifers weighing around 500 pounds at 18 cents a pound. These were delivered at Magdalena.

Brown & Tovrea of Dalhart sold 427 steer yearlings weighing 501 pounds to Baker & Son of St. Joseph, Missouri at $20.25, delivered April 29.

Lem Jones of Junction this week bought 290 medium to good quality Hereford steers from Lewis Smithwick of Marlin for delivery later this month at $18.50 cwt.; these are expected to weigh about 625 on delivery.

40 YEARS AGO

Bert Northcutt of Canyon, Texas, sold, off his ranch near Boise City, Okla., 200 mixed calves expected to weigh 425-450 pounds for Oct. 15 delivery at $33 and $35 for heifers and steers respectively to Iowa buyers.

George Edmonds & Son, Happy, Texas, sold 109 steer yearlings weighing 716 pounds payweight and delivered them last weekend to V. Lee Matney of Amarillo at $30.

Fort Griffin Cattle Co., Albany, Texas, is reported to have sold 900 two year-old steers to an Amarillo buyer for June 15-July1 delivery at $26.85 cwt.

Dallas Miller, Brady, within the past week sold 1100 blackface yearling ewes at $20 per head, weighing about 110 pounds, and 758 whiteface yearling ewes at $19 per head weighing about 98 pounds. About 700 of the blackface ewes went to Raymond Kiser and Gordon Kidd, Mason. Miller also sold 491 blackface yearling ewes to Swift & Co. at $18 cwt.

Pete Burkhalter, Seymour, bought on order for Cornbelt feeders 100 good and choice Hereford steer yearlings weighing 544 pounds at $19. He also purchased 135 yearling heifers described as good and choice Herefords weighing 593 pounds at $17.25.

Clovis Feed Lots, Clovis, N.M., sold 150 good and choice fed heifers weighing 750-800 pounds at $20 to local packers; also 150 similar grade heifers weighing 650-750 pounds at $20.50 to out of state packers.

Friona Feed Lots, Friona, sold 101 mostly choice steers with an end of good weighing 1161 pounds at $19.50 to Swift & Co., Clovis.

N.C. Crites, Clayton, N.M. sold 165 choice Hereford steer calves for delivery to a Durango, Colo. buyer at $27; they were expected to weigh 425-450 pounds and were sold from some 1400 head he had in pens for sale at Clayton.

J.J. Gibson and A.C. Piper, Paducah, sold to Capitol Cattle Co., Austin, 815 crossbred steers expected to weigh 675 pounds at $28.50 for September delivery.

Wayland Burney, Portales, N.M., sold 350 No. 1 Okie steers expected to weigh 650 at $28 for late October delivery to a Texas buyer. They were to be summered near Springer, N.M.

Dean Decker, Childress, sold 1000 native Hereford, Angus and black baldface steers expected to weigh 600 pounds at $30 for October 20 delivery for a Missouri buyer after summering them at Pagosa Springs, Colo.

M.F. Brassell, Fort Sumner, N.M., sold 100 mixed Hereford thin calves weighing 360 at $34.50 and $40 to a Ft. Sumner buyer; Travis Killough, Ft. Sumner broker, arranged the sale.

Billy Briggs, Adrian, sold 422 Hereford, Angus and some No. 1 Okie steers expected to weigh around 600 pounds at $32.50 for delivery around July 1, seller's option, and 70 similar 650 pound heifers at $29 for May 20 delivery to Fires Cattle Co., Wellington.

Hairpin Cattle Co., Silverton, Texas, bought out of the DeQuincy, La. area 400 crossbred Brahman steers weighing 225 pounds at $55 received.

George Hammond, Clovis, sold to an out-of-state buyer 358 black baldface and Okie steers weighing 650 pounds at $40.50, delivered.

Weldon Crim, Lazbuddie, sold to a Clovis buyer 45 black baldface steers weighing about 550 pounds at $40; and 24 Hereford steers weighing 488 at $41.60 delivered.

Concho Livestock Co., San Angelo, sold to local buyers 2000 Rambouillet yearling ewes out of the wool at $100 per head.

Sol Bouziden and Sons, Alva, Okla., bought from Smokey Nunn, Deming, N.M., 300 top quality Hereford and crossbred steers weighing 475 pounds at $110.

Paul Rodman, Tyron, Okla., bought in the Atoka, Okla. area 67 No. 1 steers weighing 639 pounds at $97.20.

Ernie Bliss, Bliss Cattle Co., Newkirk, Okla., bought in the Thomas, Okla. area 198 mostly choice heifers weighing 645 pounds off wheat at $80 and 110 Okie heifers weighing 625 at $79.85.

The blizzard death losses were heavy in Wyoming, Montana and the Dakotas. Sheep losses could be the most severe in history, percentage-wise, and cattle losses were substantial, mostly in calves.

USDA reported 2500 Northern California mixed slaughter and feeder lambs, mostly wooled but some in No. 1-2 pelts, 80-110 pounds, selling for $75-76.

Feeder lambs moving direct in West Texas were mostly $55-60. California and Arizona newcrop lambs weighing 90-105 pounds sold for $52-55.
