Livestock Imports
WASHINGTON (USDA) Canadian livestock
coming into the U.S. in the four-week period ending April
10 totaled 376,209 head. Market animals totaled 359,693
head, including 77,603 cattle, 239,868 hogs and 42,222
sheep.
Cattle imports included 19,078 feeders, 43,356
slaughter steers and heifers and 15,169 slaughter cows
and bulls.
Hog imports were 149,557 feeder pigs and 90,311
barrows and gilts.
Sheep imports included 36,999 lambs and 5223 ewes.
The week ended May 1 saw 16,568 feeder cattle imported
from Mexico, bringing the year to date total to 332,980
head, up 22 percent from the same period a year ago.
Livestock exports to Mexico through Texas ports as of
May 3 totaled 271,967 head including 20,928 beef cattle,
6591 dairy cattle, 124,584 hogs, 100,569 sheep and 17,620
goats.
Total exports from Mexico are up 27 percent; beef
cattle are down 42 percent, hogs are three times as many
as a year ago, sheep up 12 percent, dairy cattle down 56
percent, and goats off 45 percent.
