Most Feeder Cattle Prices
Lower Nationwide Last Week

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. —(USDA)— Feeder steers and heifers sold steady to $1 lower around the country last week, instances $2 off. Both calves and yearlings shared in the price decline.

Most buyers have about finished their major quest for grass cattle and have pastures stocked. Meanwhile, feedlot buyers watched values for fed cattle deteriorate some and were in no mood to push very hard with the numbers offered coming off wheat. However, some report the sales off wheat could be nearing completion and the remainder are pretty well picked over.

Fed cattle prices in the High Plains proved disappointing for sellers with prices on most falling back to the $65 level, which was $1 lower than the previous week. Boxed beef prices fell back under $110 late in the week.

Showlists were fairly well cleaned up to keep offerings current. Slaughter under federal inspection continued to run at a good pace with numbers killed close to the 700,000 mark.

Yearlings weighing more than 600 pounds accounted for approximately 53 percent of the week's run.
