SPRING WEEDS

Clouds have threatened and rumbled around the area recently, but most held tight to their moisture until they moved east to more hospitable country.

Fat, Feeder Lamb Prices A Shade Soft
Fat and feeder lambs found a little softness around the country after a couple of weeks of fairly liberal slaughter, though liberal in regard to recent weeks and year-ago levels only. Slaughter the next couple of weeks should be reduced due to the holiday observance.

Feeder lambs sold weak to $3 lower this week, slaughter lambs weak to $2 lower and slaughter ewes firm. Slaughter ewes made up about 55 percent of the run, feeder lambs 15 percent and goats 30 percent. Two day receipts totaled 15,506 head.

San Saba, Brownwood, Mason Feeders Higher
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady to $4 higher in Mason, Brownwood and San Saba last week, slaughter cows $2-4 higher, bulls steady, pairs and bred stock cows steady. Receipts totaled 2317 at the three sales.

The Y.O. Ranch offered 123 lots at their 26th annual invitational Texas Longhorn sale for an average of $1047 per head.

U.S. Meat Production 5% Above A Year Ago
Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 892.7 million pounds, 1.9 percent more than a week earlier and five percent above a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was up 2.1 percent at 17.65 billion pounds.

Abilene Yearling Steers, Heifers Up
Feeder steers under 500 pounds and heifers under 600 pounds sold steady, heavier steers $1-2 higher and heifers $1 higher, slaughter cows and bulls steady, stock cows and pairs $20 higher. Receipts totaled 2082 head.

Better Quality Cuero Cattle Termed Higher
Better quality feeder steers and heifers sold higher, lower grades about steady, slaughter cows lower. Receipts totaled 1139 head.

Meat In Cold Storage 10 Percent Above '98
Total red meat supplies in U.S. freezers April 30 at 933.45 million pounds were up 10 percent from a year ago and five percent above the previous month.

April Meat Production Sets New Record Highs
Commercial red meat production for the United States totaled 3.82 billion pounds in April, up three percent from April's previous record high of 3.7 billion pounds produced in 1998.

Colorado City Feeder Cattle Prices Steady
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady, slaughter cows $1-3 higher, bulls steady, bred stock cows $50 higher, pairs $75-100 higher. Receipts totaled 1392 head.

Milano Feeder Steers, Heifers Steady To Up
Feeder steers sold firm to $2 higher, heifers steady with weights 600-700 pounds $2 higher, slaughter cows and bulls steady. Receipts totaled 703 head.

Most Llano Cattle Prices Termed Higher
Feeder steers and heifers sold $2-5 higher, the full advance on lightweights, slaughter cows $2-3 higher, bulls steady. Receipts totaled 471 head.
