45 YEARS AGO

Bert Kincaid of Fort Stockton this week bought 500 blackface lambs, weighing around 65 pounds, from Harvey Martin of San Angelo at 18 cents a pound, immediate delivery.

Frank Carter of Pampa sold, two or three weeks ago, 600 mixed calves for October 15 delivery at 18 cents straight across to John Simms, also of Pampa.

Ainsworth Ranch of Fort Sumner, New Mexico, this week sold and delivered 240 steer yearlings weighing 485 pounds to an Ashland, Kansas buyer at $21.50.

Bill Davis of Dalhart bought one load of cows and calves at $130 and 10 dry cows at $90 per head, June 10, from Guy McBurnett, also of Dalhart.

McGehee Brothers of Wayside, Texas, recently sold 76 good and choice Hereford heifer yearlings weighing 547 pounds to Henry Cone of Canyon at $18.50 cwt.

Ben Dechert, Junction, bought on northern order around 2500 whiteface feeder lambs at $17.25 from Jim White, Del Rio. Expected to weigh around 70 pounds, the lambs will be delivered next Monday.

Oscar Graham of Fort Stockton bought 400 Rambouillet yearling ewes last week at $20 per head from J.B. Everidge, Wall. The ewes have been received by Graham and are on his Pecos County ranch.

Dean Burger of Gruver, Texas, sold 165 medium quality steer yearlings expected to weigh around 675 pounds at $26.50 for Sept. 20-Oct. 1 delivery to Kotara & Britten of Groom.

John Cargile, San Angelo, bought last week and received this week two loads of feeder lambs from Dr. H.A. Wimberly, San Angelo. A load of 66 pound blackface feeders brought $18, a load of Rambouillets of about the same weight at $17.

Elmo Jones of Texhoma, Okla., bought 225 heifer calves weighing 380 pounds at $33 and received them recently from Gordon Gatlin of Douglas, Ariz.

Alabama's Commissioner of Agriculture A.W. Todd got the attention of the housewives about the kind of meat they were being offered at the market by impounding over four million pounds of foreign meat, demanding that it be inspected. The court released the meat, but the story hit every newspaper, radio and television station.

Doc Collier, Wichita Falls, sold 270 choice Angus and Hereford steer yearlings averaging 700 pounds off grass at $20.50 to Ray Barr, Amarillo, for shipment on order to an Illinois feeder.

Marvin Porter, Bryan, sold 300 good fleshy Hereford yearling steers off oats in the Marlin area averaging 550 pounds at $19 to J.J. Regan, Omaha, Neb.

Parker Cattle Co., Stratford, sold 700 fed steers averaging 1000 pounds at $20 and 100 heifers weighing 850 at $19.50 to Leonard Freis, Amarillo.

Bill Porter, Clarendon,, bought 220 choice steer calves weighing 400 pounds at $21 from Russell de Cordova of Mexia.

Nevada-Garvey Ranches, Oravada, Nev., sold 2500 Hereford mixed calves expected to weigh 400 pounds at $37 and $41 for fall delivery to a California buyer.

Dick Whetsell, Foraker, Okla., sold 1500 steer calves expected to weigh 525 pounds, about two-thirds Herefords and the balance Angus and black baldfaces, at $38 cwt. for delivery Aug. 15 to Clair McLene, St. Louis, Mich. This was the eighth straight year McLene had bought Whetsell's steers.

Ike Wiggins, Wagon Mound, N.M., sold 1125 choice Hereford steer yearlings expected to weigh 700 pounds at $31.50 for mid-October delivery to a Missouri buyer; he and Bob Nicks of Springer sold 300 Hereford heifers expected to weigh 650 at $28 for October delivery to a Kansas buyer.

West Texas Wool & Mohair Assn., Mertzon, sold about a million pounds of 12 months wool within the last week, bulk of it at 80-90 cents.

Conrad Erskine, Marlin, sold to Nebraska buyers 120 Hereford and black baldface steers weighing 778 pounds at $30.

Guy Garrett, Marlin, sold and delivered to Iowa feeders 500 Hereford and black baldface steers weighing 612 pounds at $38 and 500 similar heifers weighing 592 at $34.

Moorman Feed Yards, Hereford: 252 heifers, 850 lbs., 70% choice, $36; 75 heifers, 875 lbs., 50% choice, $34.

Dumas Cattle Feeders, Dumas: 244 steers, 1150 lbs., 85% choice, $38; 475 steers, 1000 lbs., 80% choice, $37.25.

Cattle on feed June 1 in the seven states preparing monthly estimates totaled 7.7 million head, down four percent from a year ago but up nine percent from two years ago.

Dale Brown, Elida, N.M., sold to a Colorado buyer 160 heifers, native Herefords, black baldfaces and a few Brahman crosses weighing 618 pounds at $70.

L.B. Worthan, Hereford, bought in the Throckmorton area 202 No. 1 crossbred steers weighing 797 pounds at $72.65, and in New Mexico one load of mixed cows weighing 836 at $63.79 delivered to Hereford.

The Midwest electronic lamb auction sold two loads of slaughter lambs out of Illinois and Iowa at $69.75 and $70.

Si Watkins, Fort Worth, sold out of South Texas and the Gulf Coast area to a Northeast Texas buyer 166 Brahman cross cows, fives to eights, weighing 1050 pounds with 102 calves from babies to 375 pounds, the balance heavy bred, at $795 per cow.

Vann-Roach Cattle Co., Fort Worth, bought in the Texas Panhandle two loads of No. 1 Okie and crossbred heifers weighing 600-625 pounds at $74.25 delivered to Southwestern Kansas.
