ABOVE THE TORRENT,
these sheep west of San Angelo were grazing serenely last week just a few feet above the flooding Middle Concho, swollen by runoff from a downpour in the Barnhart area. The two locales are separated by only a few miles as the crow flies, but the water took a cicuitous route via Tepee Draw and was a couple of days making the trip.

Lamb Prices Continue To Lose Ground
Fat and feeder lambs continued their downward price trend this week. Trading was limited in many areas, particularly in Texas, where most auctions were closed for the 4th of July holiday.

Goldthwaite Feeder Lambs Turn Higher
Feeder lambs sold $2-3 higher, slaughter ewes $5-8 lower, slaughter bucks $3-5 higher; slaughter Angora goats $2-5 higher; stock Spanish nannies steady to $4 higher, slaughter classes $6-10 higher except billies steady. Receipts totaled 5000 head.

Most Colorado City Cattle Prices Higher
Feeder steers and heifers sold $1-4 higher, slaughter cows and bulls $2 higher, bred stock cows and pairs steady. Receipts totaled 562 head.

Graham Feeder Steer, Heifer Prices Lower
Feeder steers sold $1.50-2 lower, heifers $1-2 lower, slaughter cows and bulls steady, stock cows and pairs steady. Receipts totaled 1915 head.

Cuero Cattle Prices Termed About Steady
Feeder steers sold about steady, some 300-400 pounds higher, heifers about steady, slaughter cows and bulls about steady. Receipts totaled 1347 head.

U.S. Meat Production Up In May; Lamb Lower
Commercial red meat production for the United States in May totaled 3.6 billion pounds, up one percent from the 3.58 billion pounds produced in May 1998.

Kansas Direct Feeder Cattle Weak To Lower
Feeder steers sold weak to $1 lower last week in Kansas direct trade, heifers weak. Weather across the state was wet with spotty thunderstorms every evening. The damp conditions have made wheat harvest slow with little harvested at this time. Sales were confirmed on 10,704 head.

Domestic Wool Slow, Aussie Trade Lower
Wool trading remains slow under narrow demand. In Territory trading the past few weeks, Wyoming sold 40,000 pounds of 22-22.5 micron, classed and skirted, three inch-plus, average yield at $1.20 delivered clean; Colorado moved 118,000 pounds, bellies out, 24-25 micron, staple, average yield at 38-41 cents net producer; New Mexico sold 20,000 pounds, bellies out, staple, 25-26 micron, average yield at 40 cents f.o.b.

U.S. Meat Production 4.5% Above A Year Ago
Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 865.8 million pounds, 1.5 percent less than a week earlier and 4.5 percent more than a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was up 2.3 percent at 21.9 billion pounds.
