11th Annual Cowboy
Symposium Draws Near
LUBBOCK The 11th annual National Cowboy
Symposium and Celebration is scheduled for Thursday
through Sunday, Sept. 9-12, at the Lubbock Memorial Civic
Center.
The nation's largest such gathering, the symposium
features cowboy poets, musicians, storytellers, artists,
historians, authors, editors, publishers, photographers,
cooks and sure-enough cowboys.
Highlights include the American Cowboy Culture Awards,
the National Championship Chuckwagon Cookoff, a myriad of
readings, presentations, and exhibits covering the whole
gamut of ranch and cowboy equipment.
Thursday's schedule includes a daylong trail ride,
followed by the awards presentation. Friday will feature
a horseshoeing clinic, concurrent sessions of poetry,
songs, stories, papers and panels, a Craig Cameron horse
seminar and demonstration, the "Hank the
Cowdog" show, and an evening cowboy dance.
Saturday's agenda continues the concurrent sessions
and includes another Cameron horse seminar as well as a
Longhorn show, a downtown horse parade, Indian dancers,
the chuckwagon cookoff, an evening awards presentation
and a cowboy dance. Sunday begins with a chuckwagon
breakfast, a non-denominational cowboy devotional, a
Longhorn show and an afternoon outdoor concert.
