U.S. Meat Production
2.2% Above A Year Ago

WASHINGTON —(USDA)— Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 910.7 million pounds, 2.2 percent more than a week earlier and 3.7 percent above a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was up 2.2 percent at 29.88 billion pounds.

Cattle slaughter was estimated at 732,000 head compared to 722,000 a week earlier and 694,000 the same week a year ago, liveweights 1207 pounds, 1206 and 1217, respectively. Cumulative cattle slaughter was down 1.3 percent at 24,187,000 head. Cumulative beef production was down 2.2 percent at 17.3 billion pounds.

Calf and veal slaughter was estimated at 26,000 head, 27,000 and 30,000, liveweights 278 pounds, 275 and 258. Cumulative calf and veal slaughter was down 12.5 percent at 837,000 head. Cumulative veal production was down 12.5 percent at 165.5 million pounds.

Hog slaughter was estimated at 1,960,000 head, 1,897,000 and 1,939,000, liveweights 254 pounds, 254 and 252. Cumulative hog slaughter was up 1.2 percent at 66,144,000 head. Cumulative pork production was up 2.5 percent at 122.5 billion pounds.

Sheep and lamb slaughter was estimated at 66,000 head, 66,000 and 65,000, liveweights 128 pounds, 128 and 125. Cumulative sheep and lamb slaughter was down 5.4 percent at 2,347,000 head. Cumulative lamb and mutton production was down 5.4 percent at 165.5 million pounds.
