Larry Sandvick Determined To
Make Finals Despite Injury

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Larry Sandvick, runner-up last year to world champion bareback rider Mark Gomes, had only entered three rodeos this season when he injured his right knee in a skiing accident in January. After being sidelined for four months, Sandvick came back strong in June and has since skyrocketed in the world standings.

The Kaycee, Wyo., bareback rider took one step closer to a seventh National Finals qualification when he tied for the bareback riding title at the recent $100,177 Horse Heaven Round-Up in Kennewick, Wash.

Three weeks ago Sandvick was ranked 46th in the Crown Royal world bareback riding standings, but the Kennewick cash helped bump him to 21st — only $4676 out of the top 15.

The all-around standings remain relatively unchanged. Fred Whitfield, Hockley, Texas, has a commanding lead with $132,244. He is followed by Ty Murray, Stephenville, Texas, with $107,206; Cody Ohl, Orchard, Texas, $96,494; Trevor Brazile, Childress, Texas, $89,380; and Herbert Theriot, Poplarville, Miss., $84,182.
