U.S. Meat Production
.1% Below A Year Ago

WASHINGTON —(USDA)— Total red meat production under federal inspection during last week’s holiday-shortened period was estimated at 781.6 million pounds, 14.2 percent less than the previous week and .1 percent below a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was up 2.2 percent at 31.34 billion pounds.

Cattle slaughter was estimated at 615,000 head compared to 732,000 a week earlier and 612,000 a year ago, liveweights 1210 pounds, 1207 and 1217, respectively. Cumulative cattle slaughter was up 1.3 percent at 24,806,000 head. Cumulative beef production was up 2.2 percent at 18.14 billion pounds.

Calf and veal slaughter was estimated at 21,000 head, 26,000 and 28,000, liveweights 279 pounds, 278 and 264. Cumulative calf and veal slaughter was down 13 percent at 856,000 head. Cumulative veal production was down 12.8 percent at 148.2 million pounds.

Hog slaughter was estimated at 1,727,000 head, 1,960,000 and 1,735,000, liveweights 254 pounds, 254 and 253. Cumulative hog slaughter was up 1.2 percent at 67,890,000 head. Cumulative pork production was up 2.5 percent at 12.89 billion pounds.

Sheep and lamb slaughter was estimated at 64,000 head, 66,000 and 62,000, liveweights 128 pounds, 128 and 124. Cumulative sheep and lamb slaughter was down 5.1 percent at 2,414,000 head. Cumulative lamb and mutton production was down 5.1 percent at 160.6 million pounds.
