U.S. Meat Production
1.2% Above A Year Ago

WASHINGTON —(USDA)— Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 911.5 million pounds, 16 percent more than a week earlier and 1.2 percent more than a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was up 2.2 percent at 32.3 billion pounds.

Cattle slaughter was estimated at 727,000 head compared to 615,000 a week earlier and 698,000 a year ago, liveweights 1211 pounds, 1210 and 1215, respectively. Cumulative cattle slaughter for the year to date was up 1.4 percent at 25,532,000 head. Cumulative beef production was up 2.3 percent at 18.7 billion pounds.

Calf and veal slaughter was estimated at 25,000, 21,000 and 31,000, liveweights 279 pounds, 279 and 265. Cumulative slaughter was down 13.1 percent at 882,000 head. Cumulative veal production was down 12.7 percent at 152.6 million pounds.

Hog slaughter was estimated at 1,970,000 head, 1,748,000 and 2,040,000, liveweights 254 pounds, 254 and 253. Cumulative slaughter was up 1.1 percent at 69,894,000 head. Cumulative pork production was up 2.4 percent at 13.26 billion pounds.

Sheep and lamb slaughter was estimated at 71,000 head, 64,000 and 70,000, liveweights 127 pounds, 128 and 124. Cumulative slaughter was down 4.8 percent at 2,488,000 head. Cumulative lamb and mutton production was down 4.8 percent at 165.2 million pounds.
