"You know," said John, "I never was what you'd call a bona fide baseball fan. By that, I mean I can't tell you the names of many players, their batting averages, and so forth. I never really got mad enough at an umpire to want to see him hanged by his big toe till he was red, red, red."

A friend from Las Vegas, Jimmy the Creep, specializes in odds. Recently I had the chance to spend some time in Lake Tahoe. I thought I was going to get to swim. Turns out that the lake is only there as a threat to casino gamblers who lose and can't pay up. I called Jimmy for advice, "I don't know anything about any of those games," I admitted.

Irish ferries and buses run a fuller schedule from May until the end of August. Takes a quick eye for codes to read the different times on certain days. Three ferries sail from Cape Clear Island to Baltimore every day in the summer. Landings are wet and windswept; nevertheless, the time lapse between the last blast of the captain's horn and sailing time diverts your mind from the weather.

"Just remember to ride with your feet out of the stirrups so if your horse falls over a cliff you can jump off," instructed my new boss, on my first day, on my first ranch job. I was all of 14 years old with a hankering to be a cowboy. The only problem was that up until then my horse riding experience had pretty much been limited to riding my Grandpa's saddle that sat on a saddle tree in his bunkhouse.

I have just about made a career out of "appreciating" various critters. The symposium, "Preserving Texas' Quail Heritage into the 21st Century," will convene in Abilene on October 13-15 and it will be my pleasure to present the opening paper. My topic? "Appreciating Quail", but of course!
