U.S. Meat Production
1.1% Above A Year Ago

WASHINGTON —(USDA)— Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 926.4 million pounds, 1.1 percent more than a week earlier and 5.9 percent above a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was up 2.4 percent at 34.12 billion pounds.

Cattle slaughter was estimated at 719,000 head compared to 717,000 a week earlier and 664,000 a year ago, liveweights 1213 pounds, 1212 and 1215, respectively. Cumulative slaughter was up 1.7 percent at 26,968,000 head. Cumulative beef production was up 2.6 percent at 19.74 billion pounds.

Calf and veal slaughter was estimated at 28,000 head, 28,000 and 29,000, liveweights 255 pounds, 254 and 256. Cumulative slaughter was down 11.9 percent at 946,000 head. Cumulative veal production was down 11.5 percent at 163.2 million pounds.

Hog slaughter was estimated at 2,066,000 head, 2,029,000 and 2,021,000, liveweights 255 pounds, 254 and 256. Cumulative slaughter was up 1.2 percent at 74,018,000 head. Cumulative pork production was up 2.5 percent at 14.04 billion pounds.

Sheep and lamb slaughter was estimated at 70,000 head, 72,000 and 68,000, liveweights 128 pounds, 127 and 127. Cumulative slaughter was down 4.5 percent at 2,626,000 head. Cumulative lamb and mutton production was down 4.5 percent at 174.1 million pounds.
