Advertising has made a lot of
changes over the years. Years ago the first ad
writer was probably a cave person who scrawled a
message on the will. We still have a few
primitive types who practice their art, mostly in
airports and other public places. |

The stay in the luxurious bed and
breakfast in Ballyvaughn kicked up my average
room rent to $70 a day. All reservations were
confirmed ahead of time in Mertzon over the wire,
or by e-mail. The Irish Tourist Bureau's website
listed B&B's for each town. Rates were
standard, depending on the class of the
establishment. |

As
I See It ...
When I was in my twenties and
thirties, I traveled a lot. In my former life
(and former marriage), I worked and reared my
family in Saudi Arabian oil camps. Back then, you
couldn't get there from here. You had to go
someplace else first. |

Its The Pitts
According to a recent survey, only four
out of 100 adults admitted disliking dogs, but a
whopping 28 percent turned up their noses and
said they are violently allergic to cats. I find
it hard to believe that an animal that barks all
night, chews on your furniture, runs up expensive
vet bills, "poodles" on the rug and has
to be taken for walks at all hours of the day and
night is man's best friend. |

Wish me luck. By the time you read this,
I'll be debating an esteemed colleague, Dr. Nova
Silvy of Texas A&M, on the merits (or lack
thereof) of controlling predators in the name of
quail management. The debate is intended to be a
climax of Day One at the "Preserving Texas'
Quail Heritage into the 21st Century"
symposium conducted in Abilene. I hope it lives
up to its billing. |
