Cattle On Feed Up Five Percent
In Seven Main Feeding States
WASHINGTON (USDA) Cattle and calves on
feed for slaughter Oct. 1 in the seven leading feeding
states totaled 8.78 million head, up five percent from
the same date last year and three percent from Oct. 1,
1997.
Seven-state placements during September came to 2.35
million, up four percent from a year earlier and three
percent above September of 1997.
September marketings in the seven states amounted to
1.68 million head, seven percent above September 1998 and
10 percent above the same period two years ago.
Other disappearance during September totaled 55,000
head, up eight percent from last year and 31 percent
above September 1997.
USDA's broader tally of feedlots with a capacity of
1000 or more head showed 10.27 million cattle and calves
on feed Oct. 1, up five and three percent from one and
two years ago, respectively.
September placements in the broader tally totaled 2.76
million, four percent above 1998 and two percent above
September 1997; net placements were 2.7 million.
Placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600
pounds came to 629,000 head; 600-699 pounds 557,000;
700-799 pounds 758,000; and 800 pounds and heavier
815,000.
September marketings in the national inventory totaled
1.96 million, up five and eight percent.
Other disappearance came to 62,000 head during
September, two percent above a year earlier and 17
percent above two years ago.
Statistics from the seven leading states, compared to
a year ago:
Cattle on feed: Arizona 208,000 head, up three
percent; California 380,000, down four percent; Colorado
1,070,000, up seven percent; Iowa 315,000, up 21 percent;
Kansas 2,240,000, up seven percent; Nebraska 1,900,000,
up eight percent; Texas 2,670,000, unchanged.
Placements: Arizona 29,000, up 26 percent; California
56,000, up six percent; Colorado 330,000, down 11
percent; Iowa 60,000, down 12 percent; Kansas 600,000, up
13 percent; Nebraska 580,000, up two percent; Texas
690,000, up eight percent.
Marketings: Arizona 20,000, unchanged; California
48,000, down four percent; Colorado 210,000, up two
percent; Iowa 44,000, up five percent; Kansas 430,000, up
13 percent; Nebraska 370,000, up 16 percent; Texas
560,000, unchanged.
