TOP COYOTEROS in the recent American Coyote Trapping Championship were Bill Applegate, Marfa, and Jim Brooks, Menard. The duo bested 11 other teams in the contest, which removed more than 133 coyotes from the Jicarilla Apache Reservation near Dulce, N.M. Over the last decade, notes the reservation's official trapper, Charles Davis, the annual contest has removed enough coyotes to increase the deer fawn and elk calf survival rates from 16 to 55 percent.
