It was a light dusting and short-lived, but it offered a taste of what is to come. Then again, with another La Niña winter looming, some forecasters are betting on more mild and dry conditions.

Lamb Prices Turn Upward, Ewes Up Too
Lamb prices firmed up considerably this week, fats rising a couple of dollars in most areas while feeder lambs were firm and in some instances a couple of dollars up. Slaughter ewes were sharply higher in Texas, a little softer in Midwest markets.

Plains Fed Cattle Steady At Midweek, Volume Modest
Plains feedlots sold a modest volume of cattle Wednesday at steady to slightly better money. The Texas Cattle Feeders Association had tallied 33,000 head by midafternoon and expected to pick up several thousand more; prices ranged from a bulk of $69 to as much as $69.75. The showlist stood near 61,000 head, and captives added another 31,000.

Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 913.6 million pounds, .5 percent less than a week earlier and 1.8 percent more than a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was up 2.4 percent at 37.8 billion pounds.

Feeder steer and heifers sold steady, instances $1 lower, slaughter cows steady, bulls $1-2 lower. Feeder steers: medium and large No. 1 200-300 lbs. $101-112, 300-400 lbs. $99-107, 400-500 lbs. $89-102, 500-600 lbs. $83-89, 600-700 lbs. $70-78, 700-800 lbs. $69-76.

San Saba, Brownwood, Mason Feeders Mixed
Feeder steers and heifers weighing more than 650 pounds sold $1-4 higher in Mason, Brownwood and San Saba last week, lighter weights $1-4 lower, slaughter cows and bulls steady, pairs and bred cows in good demand. Receipts totaled 4996 head at the three sales.

Graham Cattle Steady On Rain-Short Supply

Colorado City Feeder Cattle Show Strength
Feeder steers and heifers sold firm, steers around 500 pounds $1-3 higher, slaughter cows steady and bulls, bred stock cows and pairs higher. Receipts totaled 643 head.

Most Milano Cattle Prices Called Steady
Feeder steers sold steady, heifers steady except 500-600 pounds $1-2 higher, slaughter cows and bulls steady. Receipts totaled 1171 head.

Domestic Wool Trading Slow, Aussie Wool Prices Improve
Wool trading remained slow across the nation last week, though some improved trading activity was noted by a few warehouses, and Texas warehouses sold shorter wools. Shearing of lambs was underway in both Texas and California, and the fall shearing of some ewes in Idaho.
