Whitfield Out To Set More
Than One Record At '99 NFR

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fred Whitfield has led the Crown Royal world all-around rodeo standings most of the year, but he's not content with that. He's looking to become the first African-American world all-around champion in prorodeo history this December at the National Finals Rodeo — and he's breaking records along the way.

Whitfield, who resides in Hockley, Texas, has earned $121,736 roping calves this year, and is only $1967 away from breaking reigning world champ Cody Ohl's 1998 record for regular-season earnings in calf roping. Last year, Ohl earned $123,703 to shatter former world champ Herbert Theriot's 1994 record of $110,745.

In the all-around competition, Whitfield is followed by Ty Murray, Stephenville, Texas, with $125,608; Cody Ohl, Orchard, Texas, $125,250; Herbert Theriot, Poplarville, Miss., $111,325; and Trevor Brazile, Childress, Texas, $105,975.
