Weekly Meat Import
Figures Released
WASHINGTON (USDA) A total of 27,869 metric
tons of meat was imported into the U.S. the week ending
September 25, according to the Food Safety and Inspection
Service.
Canada was by far the largest export country listed
with 15,951 metric tons, followed by Australia with 5398
mt, New Zealand, 2260, and Brazil, 1046 mt.
There were 16,745 metric tons of fresh beef and 1763
mt processed beef imported for a total of 18,508 mt of
beef. Canada exported 8220 mt of fresh beef and 310 mt of
processed beef. Australia had 4992 mt of fresh beef and
New Zealand 2015 mt. Brazil exported 1046 mt of processed
beef.
Imported pork reached 7736 mt, including 5819 fresh
and 1917 processed. Canada exported 5278 mt of fresh pork
and 1187 mt processed, while Denmark had 483 mt of fresh
and 417 mt of processed.
Veal imports for that week were 247 mt, 143 from
Canada, 68 from New Zealand and 36 from Australia.
Mutton and lamb imports were 581 mt, 332 from
Australia and 177 from New Zealand. Goat meat amounted to
38 mt, all from Australia.
Poultry imports that week were 767 mt, with 759 from
Canada.
