The "Legend," Guy Allen, Wins
Another World Steer Roping
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. As long as Guy Allen is
swinging a rope, cowboys dreaming of a single-steer
roping championship will probably be eating his dust.
Allen, known throughout the rodeo world as "The
Legend," pocketed $7929 en route to his 14th steer roping world championship at the
recent $101,180 National Finals Steer Roping in Guthrie,
Okla. He had the title locked up after the fifth
performance Friday night.
Allen, of Lovington, N.M., entered the 10-round 1999
Finals with a $27,000 lead on second place Rocky
Patterson of Pratt, Kan. His lead increased when Allen
snagged a second-place check worth $2265 in the first
round and a $378 check for a fourth-place tie in the
second round.
The 31 year-old roper then claimed a pair of $2642
checks by tying for the win in the fourth and seventh
rounds. Allen stopped the clock in 9.2 seconds to share
the four-round win with Trevor Brazile. In the seventh
round, Allen posted a 10.9-second effort to share first
place with former world champ Jim Davis.
Allen, who has qualified for a record 23 consecutive
NFSRs, won the steer roping world title with $74,566.
Patterson, a four-time NFSR qualifier from Pratt, Kan.,
finished runner-up to Allen with $56,975, but wrote his
name on the $9060 average check by roping and tying 10
steers in 146.7 seconds. Patterson's NFSR haul was
$19,630.
Former world champion steer roper Roy Cooper, of
Childress, Texas, placed second in the average in 147
seconds. Cooper, a four-time NFSR average winner and
world all-around and calf roping champion, holds the
record for the most NFSR average wins. Cooper finished
the year ranked ninth.
In the PRCA all-around race, Fred Whitfield, Hockley,
Texas, maintained his commanding lead with $148,712. Cody
Ohl, Orchard, Texas, and Ty Murray, Stephenville, Texas,
have flip-flopped back and forth all season. Ohl is
currently in second place with $126,967 to date. Murray
is close on his heels with $125,828. Herbert Theriot,
