The fastest man in a championship steer-roping contest in San Angelo last Sunday was Toots Mansfield of Big Spring, who tied five oxen in a total of 114.9 seconds and won $1598 for doing so.

Woody Lackey of Oklahoma City is reported to have bought 300 steer yearlings weighing 700 pounds at $18.50 from Sam Elliott of Amarillo, Nov. 13 delivery.

Alvin Neal of San Angelo bought two loads of clipped feeder lambs from Duke Wilson of Sonora at 15 cents per pound for shipment to Maurice McGinn of Sedgwick, Kan. They were mixed ewes and wethers and averaged 75 pounds.

Bob Hulett of Amarillo sold 303 heifer yearlings weighing 697 pounds at $17.25 to Ralph Collinson, also of Amarillo, who shipped them Nov. 14 to Colorado feeders.

Ab Wright of Amarillo sold 54 head of cows, three to seven years old and averaging 1000 pounds at $9.50 to Bloom Cattle Co., Valentine, Neb. They were delivered last weekend.

40 YEARS AGO

McFadin & Baker, Uvalde, bought and shipped to Swift & Co. this week 2000 fat whiteface lambs with No. 1 pelts at $16-16.50. The lambs had been on small grain fields in the Uvalde area.

Ralph Britten of Groom, Texas, bought 125 steer yearlings weighing 738 pounds at $22.50 and received them recently in the McLean area.

Al Gallo of Dalhart sold 163 steer yearlings weighing 660 pounds at $25 and 375 steer yearlings weighing about 825 at $24 and delivered them last week to California buyers.

Ray Barber of Amarillo, bought for Southwestern Cattle Co. there, 170 mixed calves weighing 485 pounds and located near Silverton, Texas, at $25 to $27 for delivery this week.

Lawson Stevens of Amarillo sold one load of three and four year-old Angus cows weighing near 900 pounds with 300-pounds calves at side for $225 to Ed Wilson of Dimmitt, delivered last week.

Dayton Barkley, Gruver, representing Vann Cattle Co., Fort Worth, received 1000 good and choice Okie and crossbred light yearling steers averaging 476 pounds in the Pecos area at $17.75.

Tom Price, Pampa, sold 350 steer yearlings averaging near 750 pounds at $20. Half were Herefords, the rest Hereford-Angus crosses.

Bill and Charlie Baxter, Friona, sold 650 good and choice fed steers averaging 850 pounds at $22.

Triplett Cattle Co., Amarillo, bought 500 steer yearlings averaging 600 pounds at $20.50 from G.H. Brewster, Dalhart.

Monroe Tumlinson, Sherman, earned $2374 by winning the 11th annual steer roping in San Angelo. He led the 20 steer ropers through all four go-arounds, totaling 82 seconds on four steers, a 20.7 average. Everitt Shaw, Stonewall, Okla., took 89.2 seconds to jerk and tie his four head for an average time of 22.3 seconds. Jim Bob Altizer, Del Rio, defeated Dean Oliver, Boise, Idaho, in a 12-calf match. Jim Bob's total time on 12 calves was 194.2 seconds for a 16.18 average compared to Oliver's 214.4 second total and 17.87 average.

Southwest Livestock Trading Co., Del Rio, bought 100 mixed Hereford calves weighing about 400 at $29 and $33 from W.C. McMillan, Sonora; and 91 Mexican roping steers weighing 380 at $30 from Stewart Bagby, Eagle Pass.

James W. Dixon, Friona, sold the following steers at $29.50: 299 weighing 676 to Leroy Johnson, Friona; 124 weighing 659 to Ray Murphree, Friona; and 175 weighing 652 to Reese Lawson, Hereford.

G.L. Willis, Dimmitt, bought from Farr & Harvey, Fort Sumner, N.M., 129 Hereford heifer yearlings weighing 622 pounds at $26.50 from the Mountainair, N.M. area.

Because of extreme drouth conditions in some of its northern states, Mexico was offering to allow exportation of heifers to the United States for the first time since 1957. U.S. brucellosis control regulations were regarded as likely to limit the pace, however.

Southwest Livestock Trading Co., Del Rio, bought 565 mutton lambs weighing 65-70 pounds at $28 from W.C. McMillan, Sonora; 240 whiteface ewe lambs weighing 65 at $30 and 275 mutton lambs of similar weight at $28 from Corky Schwiening, Sonora; and 600 bred nannies from Floyd Featherston, Del Rio, at $6 per head.

Cattle and calves on feed Nov. 1 in the seven states preparing monthly estimates totaled 6,796,000 head, down 28 percent from a year earlier and 29 percent under two years ago.

Texas drylot sheep feeders had 86,000 sheep and lambs on feed for slaughter Nov. 1, a decline of 20 percent from Oct. 1 and eight percent fewer than on Nov. 1 last year. Placements during October totaled 36,000 head, much less than the 58,000 head marketed, USDA reported.

Ell Dee Field, Dalhart, sold to a local buyer 780 No. 1 Okie and better steers weighing about 700 pounds at $32.50, delivered.

Don Driggers, Bar Y Ranch, Santa Rosa, N.M., sold to a New Mexico buyer 300 choice Hereford springer cows 3-6 years old weighing over 1000 pounds at $350 per head.

New officers of the American Hereford Assn. were elected at the association's annual convention in Kansas City. Gene Schroeder, Palisade, Neb., was elected president and David Largent, Wilsall, Mont., senior vice president.

Texas mohair market made another significant advance this week when Ingram and Brownwood warehouses sold half a million pounds of fall adult hair at $4.10 a pound, highest price of the fall season. This was original-bag average adult.

Uvalde Producers Wool and Mohair sold a little more than 80,000 pounds out of 100,000 pounds of yearling hair offered, price range mostly $1.11-1.81, bulk of sales in the $1.30-1.40 range.
