Cattle On Feed Up Six Percent
In Seven Main Feeding States

WASHINGTON —(USDA)— Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter Nov. 1 in the seven leading feeding states totaled 9.77 million head, up six percent from the same date last year and four percent from Oct. 1, 1997.

Seven-state placements during October came to 2.61 million, up nine percent from a year earlier and six percent above October of 1997.

October marketings in the seven states amounted to 1.56 million head, one percent above both October 1998 and the same period two years ago.

Other disappearance during October totaled 63,000 head, up 40 percent from last year but 18 percent below October 1997.

USDA's broader tally of feedlots with a capacity of 1000 or more head showed 11.46 million cattle and calves on feed Oct. 1, up six and four percent from one and two years ago, respectively.

October placements in the broader tally totaled 3.09 million, nine percent above 1998 and six percent above October 1997; net placements were 3.01 million. Placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds came to 1.02 million head; 600-699 pounds 797,000; 700-799 pounds 687,000; and 800 pounds and heavier 588,000.

October marketings in the national inventory totaled 1.83 million, up three and one percent.

Other disappearance came to 80,000 head during October, 54 percent above a year earlier but 12 percent below two years ago.

Statistics from the seven leading states, compared to a year ago:

Cattle on feed: Arizona 239,000 head, up 17 percent; California 395,000, down one percent; Colorado 1,220,000, up four percent; Iowa 345,000, up 17 percent; Kansas 2,390,000, up six percent; Nebraska 2,250,000, up 11 percent; Texas 2,930,000, up four percent.

Placements: Arizona 48,000, up 78 percent; California 67,000, up 12 percent; Colorado 360,000, up four percent; Iowa 84,000, up 14 percent; Kansas 550,000, up two percent; Nebraska 690,000, up 15 percent; Texas 810,000, up eight percent.

Marketings: Arizona 15,000, down 25 percent; California 47,000, down six percent; Colorado 205,000, up 21 percent; Iowa 53,000, up 43 percent; Kansas 380,000, up six percent; Nebraska 330,000, up three percent; Texas 530,000, down nine percent.
