Roy Byrd of Canyon is reported to have sold 350 heifer calves at $18 and 250 steer calves at $21 for delivery around Jan. 8 to Ben Snyder of Amarillo.

Patterson Bros. of Roswell are reported to have sold three loads of fed clipped lambs to Stanley Nielson, buyer for Swift & Co., at 18 cents per pound.

Buck Cone of Amarillo sold, to Russell Ellsaesser of Sublette, Kan., 98 choice Angus cows three to five years old and with 375 pound calves at side at $185 per pair, delivered Dec. 4.

Jay Jones of Goodwell, Okla. bought 360 steers expected to weigh 750-800 pounds from James L. Rowan, also of Goodwell, for delivery Dec. 11 at $20 cwt.

Roswell Wool & Mohair Co. sold a carload of lamb wool last weekend to Sheridan & Shultz of Boston at 52 cents. Most of the wool was owned by Charlie Waller.

40 YEARS AGO

Reynolds Foster, Sterling City, sold through Mid-West Feed Yards, San Angelo, this week a load of fat No. 1 pelt lambs weighing 98 pounds at $15.

Fred Heimann of Hayden, N.M., is reported to have sold about 300 heifer yearlings weighing near 600 pounds at $20.50 to an Amarillo buyer, delivered Dec. 2.

Jim Monroe, representing the Guseman Estate at Hereford, Texas, sold 200 steer yearlings weighing 740 pounds at $23 and delivered them last Saturday to Iowa buyers.

Alex Inman of Reydon, Okla., bought 150 steer calves weighing a little under 400 pounds at $23 and received them last week in the Woodward area.

Jack Drake, San Angelo, bought and received this week from McFadin & Baker, Uvalde, around 800 feeder lambs with No. 1 pelts, weighing 80 pounds at $14.50.

Ward Howard, Kansas City, Kan., bought 400 steer yearlings weighing about 575 pounds at $20.50 from Hugh Ford, Amarillo. Howard also bought 400 heifers weighing 657 at $19 from M.V. Young, Tribune, Kan., for shipment on order to the Scott City area.

Armando Raynal, well known rancher of Chihuahua, Mexico, shipped 806 of his reputation Hereford steer calves weighing from 300 to 500 pounds from El Paso to Humboldt, Iowa, where they were to be sold through the Humboldt Livestock Commission Co. auction.

E.S. Johnny Walker, state land commissioner for New Mexico, announced a 30-day moratorium on sale of state lands. Since Walker took the land office in January 1961, a total of 1,878,994 acres of state-owned land had been sold at auction for $25,274,962.

John Prather, who ranched near Alamogordo, N.M. (and became a legend in his own time) celebrated his 91st birthday and was still standing off the whole of the U.S. Army single-handedly, as he had for nine years. In 1956 the government tried to force Prather into selling his ranch for an extension to the McGregor Missile Range. At that time Prather was quoted as saying, "I'm 82 years old, but if they think they can wait me out until I die, they have a long wait. I figure to live until I'm 100 — and then I may decide to just go ahead and live another century."

Olton Feedyard opened near Olton, Texas, with Charles Koontz as manager and Dr. Van Brimhall, assistant manager. The 22,500 head Olton lots were built by a 20-man corporation made up of local farmers and businessmen.

Don Fleming, foreman for McCasland & Schiller ranch interests in Highmore, S.D., sold off the Highmore area ranches 1700 Hereford, Angus and black baldface steers weighing a little more than 800 pounds at $30 delivered to Colorado feed yards.

Roy Thompson and Copus Boyd, Happy, sold 1225 No. 1-2 Okie steers weighing 675-700 pounds at $30.

Mrs. Dessie Sawyer, Crossroads, N.M., sold 400 Hereford heifer and steer calves weighing 420 and 440 pounds at $32 and $35 delivered to Pete Buske, Friona.

R.B. Bagley, San Saba, contracted 5500 whiteface mutton lambs off grainfields at $28 to Monfort Packing Co., Greeley, Colo.

Homer Hill & Sons of Hart and Dimmitt, Texas, bought in the Benjamin, Texas area 435 Hereford, black baldface, Angus and a few Charolais cross steer calves weighing 475 pounds at $29.50.

Harriet Bros. and Cameron Taylor, Worland, Wyo., sold 3300 lambs off beet pasture at $38 f.o.b. loading points, sorting 30-40 percent fat.

Hollis Blackwell, Goldthwaite, sold 1500 fed lambs in No. 1 pelts at $42 delivered to Swift & Co., Scottsbluff, Neb. The lambs were on feed at Scottsbluff, weight 104-105 pounds.

Price Ranch, Portales, N.M., sold to a Clovis buyer 124 cows, half culls and balance young open cows, weighing 821 pounds at $15 delivered.

Welfare officials report 9.4 percent of Texas' population, a total of 1,055,154, received $35.8 million worth of food stamps during August. The number of persons on food stamp rolls increased by 19,597 from July.

Tommy McGee, Elida, N.M., sold to a New Mexico buyer 100 Hereford cows, 6-9 years old, two with calves and the balance heavy springers, at $540 per head.

Rio Bravo Cattle Co., Strawn, bought out of Mississippi a load of No. 1 Okie heifer calves weighing 311 pounds at $80.61 delivered to Fort Stockton; and two loads of similar but heavier heifers, one load weighing 364 at $77.92, the other weighing 412 at $75.40, all delivered to Strawn.

Fifty-nine bulls averaged $1585 in the West Texas Classic Limousin Sale at San Angelo. Twelve percentage pairs averaged $772.50 and 24 bred heifers $624.50.

Ty Jones Cattle Co., Canyon, bought in the Texas Panhandle 400 No. 1-1½ Okie and crossbred steers weighing 750 pounds at $83, also 220 No. 1 Okie heifers weighing 675 at $80.
