U.S. Meat Production
3.8% Below A Year Ago

WASHINGTON —(USDA)— Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 876.4 million pounds, 2.1 percent less than a week earlier and 3.8 percent less than a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was up two percent at 43.07 billion pounds.

Cattle slaughter was estimated at 661,000 head compared to 678,000 a week earlier and 658,000 a year ago, liveweights 1221 pounds, 1219 and 1216, respectively. Cumulative cattle slaughter was up 1.8 percent at 33,761,000 head. Cumulative beef production was up 2.7 percent at 24.7 billion pounds.

Calf and veal slaughter was estimated at 25,000 head, 25,000 and 28,000, liveweights 293 pounds, 298 and 276. Cumulative slaughter was down 12.3 percent at 1,179,000 head. Cumulative veal production was down 11.1 percent at 205.1 million pounds.

Hog slaughter was estimated at 1,988,000 head, 2,029,000 and 2,202,000, liveweights 263 pounds, 263 and 262. Cumulative slaughter was up .2 percent at 94,259,000 head. Cumulative pork production was up 1.3 percent at 17.9 billion pounds.

Sheep and lamb slaughter was estimated at 83,000 head, 77,000 and 80,000, liveweights 135 pounds, 134 and 135. Cumulative slaughter was down 3.5 percent at 3,348,000 head. Cumulative lamb and mutton production was down 3.2 percent at 221.6 million pounds.
