Baker Hughes reported on Aug. 9 that the U.S. active drilling rig count was at 934, down eight from the week before and down 123 from a year ago. The Canadian rig count showed 140 rigs at work and that is up three for the week and down 69 from this time last year. Brent Crude oil near month futures were quoted at $57.38 per barrel while West Texas Intermediate was at $54.27 which is the least difference that we’ve seen between them in a long time. Plains All American bulletin showed WTI at $50.50-51 per barrel. Natural gas futures were at $2.13 per mcf. Ethanol futures were at $1.43 per gallon and gasoline was $1.66. This puts ethanol at 86% of the price of gasoline while providing 67% of the BTU’s.
