The Colorado River of Texas originates in the Panhandle near the town of Lamesa. Some 860 miles later, it empties into Matagorda Bay near the town of Matagorda. Though some of the earliest European immigrants settled along the lower Colorado, the river presented challenges as a navigational route because of an enormous “raft” of driftwood blocking its mouth.
