Red Meat Production 2.9% Below A Year Ago

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — (USDA) — Total red meat production under federal inspection for the week ending June 13 was estimated at 996.1 million pounds. This was 1.4 percent lower than a week ago and 0.3 percent higher than a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was 2.9 percent lower from last year.

            Cattle slaughter was estimated at 524,000 head compared with 533,000 the previous week and 560,000 for the same period last year, liveweights 1465 pounds, 1470 and 1409, respectively. Beef production was estimated at 468.9 million pounds compared with 479.1 million the previous week and 482.5 million for the same period last year. Cumulative beef production was 10,985.5 million pounds down 6.3 percent from last year. Cumulative cattle slaughter was 12,245,000 head, down 9.0 percent.

            Calf and veal slaughter was 5000 head, 5000 and 2000, liveweights 380 pounds, 376 and 359. Calf and veal meat production was 1.0 million pounds, 1.0 million and 0.5 million. Cumulative meat production was 9.2 million pounds, down 19.2 percent and slaughter was 46,000 head, down 20.3 percent.
