Before he reformed, Andrew Jackson Potter had a knack for getting into trouble. He admittedly had made it a practice to “drink, get drunk, blaspheme, fight, gamble and horse-race” since the age of 10. He had served in the U.S. Army and fought Indians in New Mexico and Arizona for six years before coming to Bastrop County, Texas, in 1853. Nothing much spooked him.
